Assessing Yoga as a Migraine treatment
Here is a small case study by Mr. Shankar.
Mr. Shankar evaluated about 100 people between the age groups of 18 to 60. They all were experiencing severe migraines which are on to having an average of 5 to 15 headaches per month. These people were divided into two groups that are:-
- Group 1: People only on medication
- Group 2: People on medication who also practiced yoga
Both the groups were given instructions about appropriate medications, proper diet, adequate sleep, and exercise.
Group 2 underwent a 1 hour of yoga 4 days a week for about a month. The practice included all the required exercises, medication, and yoga postures. After a month, this group practiced yoga at home 6 days a week for an additional 2 months.
Both the group members wrote down all the migraine information on the duration, severity, and also the medication taken by them.
At the end of this survey, while everyone saw the improvements the benefits were truly more for group 2 as they had been practicing yoga too. The study shows that the group had begun with 9.2 headaches per month and ended the 3-month study period with 4.6 headaches per month. That was an excellent reduction of 50 percent.
After the end of this three-month study, it proved that the group 2 who also practiced yoga along with medication had a great decrease of 48 percent in the average intake of pills, whereas the members of group 1 hardly had a decrease of 13 percent.
The results of the following case study show that yoga can reduce not just the pain but also the high treatment costs required for migraines.
Mr. Shankar also stated that “Doing yoga can truly be a game-changer for the people who can’t afford expensive medicines.”
