Niabi Zoo History – All You Need to Know
Welcome to the Niabi Zoo, where the name “Niabi” has a special meaning from the language of the Wazhaze (Osage Nation) Native Americans. “Niyabi” means “deer cubs saved by hunters”, symbolizing the power of choice in preserving life and the natural world. Just as the hunter made the decision to save the fawn, we face an important choice to preserve species, habitats and global ecosystems for a brighter future.
The roots of our zoo go back to 1959 when local animal lover and masonry contractor Gordon V. McLane opened McLane’s Wild Animal Farm to share the wonder of exotic creatures with the public. In 1963, the amazing Patty S. Wyman (1895–1976) took charge, acquiring Wild Animal Farm and its land, generously deeding it to Rock Island County Forest Preserve District. Since then, we have been a vital part of this wonderful community, dedicated to creating a thriving haven for both wildlife and visitors. Join us on this exciting journey of conservation and discovery!

What happened to the lions at Niabi Zoo?
With a heavy heart, the zoo made the difficult decision to mercifully euthanize the lion, Savannah. As noted in the Niabi Zoo’s media release, she bravely battled complications from breast cancer and progressive kidney failure. Savannah has been a favorite lion of visitors for generations and was the last African lion at the zoo. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were touched by his majestic presence at Niabi Zoo.
