How to take care of your Hair this Summer?

Whether it is wearing loose colorful clothes or hanging out on the poolside or enjoying that cool evening breeze, summer brings along with it a lot of joys and opportunities. But what about taking care of your hair this summer?

With the summer already on its peak, most of us are enjoying the season to the full. But unfortunately, it is the worst time for your hair and skin. You don’t even realize how cruel is summer sun for your hair! So it becomes of utmost importance to take care of your hair in summer.

And I’m here to help you out in it. Just read through this article and I’m sure you’ll learn a lot more.

Tips for protecting your hair in summer:

1. APPLY SUNSCREEN

You have no idea how much damage the direct sun rays cause to your hair. Your scalp becomes dry and dirty and it may also cause various skin diseases of the scalp, ranging from Solar Keratosis to even skin cancer in the scalp (though it is quite rare).
So why not use sunscreen for hair? But do use a good one containing Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. Choosing a good sunscreen for your hair is not as easy and should be done with extreme care.
Here is a list of 10 best sunscreens to protect your hair.

2. CONDITION YOUR HAIR

When it’s hot and your scalp becomes dry, it needs more conditioning than any other time. So search out for a nourishing and moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that cater to the needs of your hair and end up making your scalp moist and healthy.
A conditioner does to your hair what body lotions do to your body. So if you are the one who never forgets applying lotion before bed, do add conditioners in your bathroom now! But consider your hair type and texture before choosing one.

3. AVOID COLORING

If you are planning to get some color this summer, stop away right now! Exposure to the sun and chemicals of the pool can fade your color. Hence avoid coloring your hair at a spa or even at home.
If you want to color your hair or change the color during summer, try and do it a month or two before the sun hits hard. You can also try organic ingredients to color your locks.

4. WASH LESS OFTEN

You must have heard that in summers, hair gets dry and dusty and so wash your hair daily or on consecutive days to clean them. But- IT IS COMPLETELY A MYTH!!
Rather it is suggested that wash your hair less often in summers. This is because washing your hair removes natural oils from scalp and washing too often may result in your hair becoming drier. Also, oil your hair before and after washing to lock moisture.

5. CARRY LOOSE STYLES

It’s summer and you don’t need to carry heavy hairstyles at all. Take a break from all those tight styles that really give you a headache!
Try messy buns, simple buns, ponytails, etc. and let your hair breathe out. Believe me, loose styles look funky and are damn comfortable.
You’ll yourself feel the comfort when on work, on those hot humid days, you won’t feel your hair strands on your neck. (That’s really irritating, Arghh!)

6. BEFORE SWIMMING

Ever heard the hair color change to green after you spend quite a good time in the swimming pool? Well, it is true. A blonde can truly understand the pain.
This is because Chlorine mixed in water is actually very drying for your hair. When you go swimming and your hair gets wet with chlorinated water, the hair shafts absorb the chlorine. This strips your hair of its natural oils and therefore causes damage.
So, you understand how important it is to protect your hair while swimming. You may apply some protective cream on your hair before you go swimming. You can also oil your hair as oil doesn’t mix with water, so oiled hair doesn’t let water into your hair thus preventing them from chemicals. Rather just wash your hair with fresh clean water before and after swimming.

7. DRINK EXCESS WATER

DRINK.MORE.AND.MORE.WATER!!! I still remember these words of Mom whenever I got pimples or hair fall. Water is a wonder fluid and can do wonders for your skin and hair. Especially in summer, it becomes more important to drink more water because our body needs extra hydration to maintain its activities.
I seriously cannot stress enough the benefits of water. When your body is well hydrated, your skin and scalp remain hydrated, thus preventing dry scalp and all that damage.
Had you ever thought hair care could be such easy! Just drink one glass of water every other hour and you are doing a lot for your hair. Great, no?

8. AVOID EXCESSIVE HEAT

Say NO to your straighteners and curlers this season. Avoid using dryers and wash your hair an hour ago, so that they get ample time to air-dry. Your hair are already too dry in summers and heat devices just act as icing on the cake. So this summer let your hair be natural as they are and flaunt your original self!

9. SAY NO TO FRIZZ

Who among us doesn’t hate frizz? Frizzy hair are more prone to hair fall and damage. And the summer heat ends up making your hair more entangled and frizzy.
Try and avoid frizz in the summer months. Use a wide-mouthed comb instead of a hair-brush. Use detangling serums or oils for your hair. Put your hair tied and show off your hair in elegant braids, ponytails, buns, or knots. This not only controls frizz but also prevents sweating. (Sweating in the hair also cause hair fall and make them smelly.)

10. DON’T SKIP A TRIM

It’s common in summers to have dry and split ends in your hair. Split ends result in rough hair and a really bad appearance. This summer get yourself a trim and get rid of them. And if you don’t want to shorten your hair, don’t worry. Hair grows very fast in summer and you’ll regain your original hair within a short time. So, what are you waiting for? Get yourself a good haircut and bring life to your hair.

11. EAT RIGHT

While you adopt the above-mentioned methods to take care of your hair, they won’t work effectively on your hair until you intake a healthy diet. Include in your diet, all those foods that you find are best suited for your hair.
Omega-3 fatty acids are found to be very good for strong, shiny, and healthy hair. These can be found in spinach, salmon, eggs, etc. Have green vegetables. (They are all-rounders for your body.) Citrus fruits rich in Vitamin c and anti-oxidants improve hair growth. Eat carrots that are rich in Vitamin A and nuts rich in zinc.
So, next time you shop your groceries, make sure you include these items on your list.
